Marriage Licenses

The Register of Deeds Office issues and records licenses for marriages performed in Haywood County. The requirements are as follows:

Marriage License fee is $50.00.

There is no waiting period, and blood tests and physicals are not required.

The marriage license is valid for 60 days from the date of issue , or the marriage can be performed the same day.

The license is valid in any county in North Carolina as long as it is returned to the Register of Deeds in the county in which it was issued. Failure to do so subjects the person performing the ceremony to a $200.00 fine.

In North Carolina, only a minister authorized by his/her church or magistrate can perfom weddings. The minister or magistrate must be presented with a valid marriage license before the marriage can be performed.

Both parties must appear before the Register of Deeds staff. Both parties must present a valid drivers license, a valid picture ID, or a certified birth certificate.

Both parties must be 18 years of age.

Both parties must provide proof of social security number.

If either party has been married before, please know the month and year when the last marriage ended.
